About The Author

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who no longer pauses to wonder and stand in rapt awe, is as good as dead.”
(Albert Einstein.)

“Sometimes it’s better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness.”
(Terry Pratchett, Men At Arms)

Born on the Gascoyne River country of Western Australia, I read for degrees in computer science and applied mathematics at Griffith University in Brisbane, and have been knocking about ever since as an amateur scholar, avid reader (science fiction and fantasy, but will devour anything written well), and apprentice hacker. I live on the western shore of Moreton Bay in Queensland, Australia, and practice Roman Catholicism at Holy Cross Parish, which has just annexed Mango Hill. This is my ‘block:

On the Blue Pyramid‘s Country Quiz, I turned out to be Taiwan:

Despite enormous setbacks, including the fact that most people refuse to recognize who you are or even that you exist at all, you’ve built yourself into quite a productive person. You’ve got a little trouble maintaining a sense of personal order, but through the mess, you’re still very industrious and have a small but pivotal impact on almost everyone you know, and even people you don’t.You make a whole lot of stuff.

I play go at my local club, various Australian tournaments, Critical Mass North, KGS Go Server and by correspondence. After learning the game at Griffith University, I joined the Brisbane Go Club. My strength has a mean of 32 kyu with a standard deviation of three stones.

In my copious free time, I belong to Australian Mensa on general principles, the IEEE Computer Society and Association for Computing Machinery as my professional guilds, the Australian chapter of the Internet Society to support keeping the bastards honest, and the Black Stump Working Group as a deniable cutout when indulging my insidious and ruthless scheming.

On the Known Net I am also identified as horatio@puntbow.net.au, aguido@facebook.com, horatio@go.org.au, and horatio@computer.org. I maintain a collection on LibraryThing, a stash of haiku at DeviantArt, a stream of consciousness on Twitter and a desultory sort of photographic collection at Flickr.
